We just tested on chapter 6, dealing with inequalities and graphing inequalities. We related inequalities to city blocks and choosing a subway station to walk to, as well as determining how much to work in order to earn a minimum amount of money. We are all very excited about midterms…

As the second quarter winds down, high school students have been busy in the computer lab. The activity ranges from writing papers for classes to last minute printing for assignments that are due. In computer lab, the students have been learning the ins and outs of Google Maps. Google Maps is a program developed by Google to assist people in looking at maps. The most common use of Google Maps is acquiring directions, but there is much more to the program. The student have learned how to use all the special features including the Street View setting which lets users see destinations as if they were standing on the street. Many students found it interesting to see their home or their favorite location around the city. Technology keeps improving and we strive to keep the students knowledge improving as well.

word2007Middle school has been learning a lot in computer lab in the last few weeks. We just recently completed our curriculum of Microsoft Word 2007. We learned all the new features and options of the new Microsoft program. We have started to learn how to use Google as a search engine on the Internet. We learned how to narrow our searches through keywords and then identify correct information in Google. Google has a lot of great features and we are having lots of fun learning about them all.

We are currently studying the parts of the human body and what to do and say in case of a medical emergency, what to do when you are in a doctor’s office and what information should you give to get services. We are also learning the differences in the medical services in the US and that of many Hispanic countries.

We are encountering the literature of the Golden age in Spain. We are reading a short picaresque novel called “”. This novel depicts the everyday life in the Spain of the era, the good and the bad. Its reading was originally prohibited in Spain because of the portrayal of the people in authority and church hierarchy. For that very reason, the author is unknown. As most things forbidden it was in everyone’s mouths and ears. It was translated to over 10 languages across Europe and is now part of the Spanish literary canon. As we enjoy the adventures of Lazarillo we understand better the people of the time and even come across things that are said today and never understood before where they came from. It is great to see how the more things change the more they stay the same.

In 11th Grade English, we have taken a turn for the better with some mind boggling and suspenseful short stories. Students have been exposed to 5 particularly important reading strategies that will assist them in dissecting literary works. Using interesting and unique short stories have helped them identify literary elements, devices and techniques that authors use to compel their readers. Hopefully as students continue to get exposed to the amazing world of short stories, their minds will continue to be opened and their critical thinking skills will broaden.

In 12th Grade English, we have entered into the Elizabethan Period – The World of Shakespeare. Students have stood up and expressed their very own soliloquies. Their thoughts about their future ambitions were shared out loud. What an interesting time, I even learned something about each student that I never knew before. After knowing them for 2 to 4 years, I never really asked about what their hopes for their future were. We have read through Act One, and thank goodness for students with such great personalities that help with reading out loud and making class a little more exciting.

In Psychology, we have been discussing the phenomenon of Memory. Have you ever tried to remember something and ever stated, “It’s right at the tip of my tongue”. Well this is part of trying to retrieve memorable events or words and is literally called, On the top of the Tongue Phenomenon. Studying Psychology helps students to slow down the process of mental processes and human behavior. One fun activity we did in class was recall promises that were broken. Students were able to retrieve that information really quickly. We are getting ready to enter into the chapter on Thinking and Language Development. It definitely gets better and better.

In Physics Lab students are designing a roller coaster out of Knex to wrap up our study of mechanics. Each team is responsible for a different aspect of the construction. Some are designing the loops, some are designing the tracks, and others are designing the roller coaster car for the track. The students will then study what worked and did not work with their design and make the necessary adjustment to provide a thrilling ride.

Chemistry students have come to appreciate the mole, a unit used in Chemistry. They raced the clock to count out 200 small beads and then weighed the 200 beads. They quickly realized that it was much faster to weigh the beads than count them. They took this concept into the lab and weighed 1 mole samples of various materials and compared the volume of each.
