How Many Ants?

Our second graders had their thinking caps on when they had to figure out how many army ants were hiding behind a rock. They were able to see how many ants were in the lower chamber and, they were told how many ants there were in all, but how many ants were behind the rock?! After some brainstorming they were able to come up with a number sentence to answer the question. They also seemed eager to begin their project which will consist of creating their own story problem. They will have the opportunity to color their chamber, glue the ants, and then, write a story to match their picture. This is a great opportunity for our second graders to visualize story problems and even use their creative abilities to come up with fun story problems.
