Our second grade students learned a valuable lesson when we went to Manhattan to see the play “James and the Giant Peach.” They learned that we are special. Even if others mistreat us, we need to accept ourselves. Just as James overcame the verbal abuse he endured in his aunt’s household, we also can overcome obstacles. He was able to escape and reach a place where he was accepted, but in order to get there he had to be creative and believe in himself. After losing his parents and being mistreated by his aunts, James embarked on an incredible journey. James had an adventure inside a peach with a spider, a ladybug, a centipede, and a grasshopper. After surviving the sharks, the seagulls, and the tremendous sea, they found themselves in Manhattan. They found a place where they were accepted just as we are. Our students completely enjoyed the trip. Some enjoyed the bumpy ride to the city, while others were thrilled with the opportunity to sing songs of praise. There were a few who took a nap while others looked at our beautiful skyscrapers. Some of the other things our students enjoyed were: seeing James go inside the peach, watching the bugs dance, and seeing how James and the bugs waved at the dangerous sharks. They also remembered that the bugs were in the middle of the ocean but did not know how to swim. They also liked to see the bugs eating the giant peach. Overall it was a wonderful experience for our second graders as they learned a valuable lesson- God made us special!
