Fly Me To The Moon

In November we visited the Museum of Natural History. While there, we saw a space show at the planetarium in which we became astronauts that were traveling from earth to the moon. We got to see the moon up close and even the dark side that is never visible to us on earth. We also explored the museum’s exhibits of African and North American mammals. This let us see what the animals we have studied about, as well as what their habitats, actually looked like.

NYC Fire Museum

Students had fun on our trip to the New York City Fire Museum. While there we learned about how the first fire brigades and departments in New York formed. We got to see up close antique fire engines and gear, as well as a 911 memorial. We ended the trip having to escape safely from a room on fire and describe all fire hazards we found while going through it.

Go Kidney Beans

This month in Science is we studied the plant cycle- from seed to adult. First, we diagramed the parts of a seed and then planted beans to watch them grow. This was part of an experiment in which we followed the scientific method in order to figure out which bean sprout grows the fastest (this year the kidney beans won!). The class had to form hypothesis’, observe and collect data daily, then form a conclusion about whether or not they were able to confirm their hypothesis or not.

Our Brain and Senses

We have been studying what psychology is and how it affects the body. The students have learned about our brain and senses, our perceptions and nature vs. nuture theory. This year I am teaching in a flipped classroom so the students will copy vocabulary and examples into their notes for HW (kind of pre reading for the next day’s lesson). In class the next day, they will watch a mini lesson of how to and practice the application in front of me. This has been helpful in not only the student understanding during homework/classwork, but in starting up math conversations during class about what to do and why. Currently, we are studying how we learn. Today we talked about making good decisions and judgements.

Forensics Scientists

We have been studying what a forensic scientists job is, what evidence is located at the crime scene and which types are not, and many types of tools that forensics experts use to help solve a crime. Currently, we are studying questioned documents and forgeries. The students are learning how to spot handwriting that is altered and therefore a forgery.

Algebra 2

We have been studying number operations and reviewing algebra 1 topics for the first half of this school year. This year I am teaching in a flipped classroom for math and so the students will copy vocabulary and examples into their notes for HW (kind of pre reading for the next day’s lesson). In class the next day, they will watch a mini lesson of how to and practice the application in front of me. This has been helpful in not only the student understanding during homework/classwork, but in starting up math conversations during class about what to do and why. Currently, we are studying radical equations and how to solve for x if it is in the radicand.

Geometry

We have been immersing ourselves in geometry vocabulary, symbols and diagrams this first half of the school year. Currently, we are studying how to prove theorems by writing a 2 column proof.

Algebra

We have been exploring equations this half of the school year. The class has been looking for patterns in solving, graphing and writing equations. Currently, we are studying linear equations and the slope of a line.

Pre Algebra

We have been exploring numbers this half of the school year. The class has found patterns for working with integers, variables and exponents. This year I am teaching in a flipped classroom for math and so the students will copy vocabulary and examples into their notes for HW (kind of pre-reading for the next day’s lesson). In class the next day, they will watch a mini lesson of how to and practice the application in front of me. This has been helpful in not only the student understanding during homework/classwork, but in starting up math conversations during class about what to do and why. Currently, we are studying using operations with rational numbers.
