Class Elections
This month in Social Studies we are studying government. While learning about the executive branch, 4th grade also held Presidential and Vice-presidential elections. Students wrote campaign speeches and made a poster that included their slogan. They also had to campaigne amongst each other before they gave their speech to ensure getting more votes. Finally, the class voted by secret ballot for their new president and vice-president. Congratulations to our new President Isadora Macedo and Vice-President Jaymie Franco! Also, students taking part in the legislative branch have been elected as Senators and House of Representatives members. Our bill writers also tried to get their classroom bill passed through Congress and made into a law.

Butterflies
Along with our insect unit, we have been learning about the life cycle of butterflies. In addition to studying about them we have been observing actual butterfly larvae in our classroom! We watched as tiny baby caterpillars ate (and ate and ate) and grew larger, turned into golden chrysalis’, and eventually emerged as beautiful butterflies. Finally, we released these amazing creatures that God created back into their natural environment.

Paul
In Bible we have been studying the life of Paul. We followed along on his four missionary journeys. We learned about diligence by seeing how even after being beaten, ostracized, imprisoned, stoned, and even shipwrecked (more than once!), he continued to have faith in God and preach the gospel. We saw how through Jesus, he was changed from a person who hated and persecuted Christians to the greatest Christian missionary of all time. What an encouragement to win the race!

Electricity
In Science, students were being electrified! We have been exploring static electricity. Not only have we been learning about atoms and how electricity works by the exchange of electrons, we also did hair raising, paper shifting, and foil lifting labs. Students discovered how and why static clings, lightning sparks, thunder snaps, and why opposites really do attract.

Harriet Tubman
Students have been studying about black history from the time of slavery through the Civil War. We learned how abolitionists fought for equal rights and how the brave people in the underground railroad helped slaves escape to freedom. We went to see the play Freedom Train, which dramatizes the story of Harriet Tubman from the time she was a child to her death. The students also memorized and recited a poem about Tubman’s life as a runaway slave who went back 19 times to help 300 other slaves escape.

Stepping Up Ceremony
We worked hard and now we have made it!!! Middle school here we come!!! I don’t want to leave 5th grade, can I stay one more year. These were some of the last comments and thoughts as 5th grade prepared for their stepping up ceremony. As each one shared a thought it reflected what had taken place in the last 10 months. At the very end the students came to the conclusion that fifth grade was there best year ever and that they would never forget it. I only have one thing to say PRICELESS

Spruce Lake
Rock Climbing, Nature walk, and power swing – a class trip couldn’t get any better than this!! Each endeavor came with a challenge attached. As put by one of the students the rock climbing was like a symbol of life. In your life there are going to be easy parts to climb and hard parts. Don’t let the fear like a giant scare you from climbing the wall to reach the goal. Which, in this case was a cow bell at the top of the most difficult part of the wall!

Gracie Mansion
Did you know about all the History here in New York? Well 5th grade became adventures as we went to Manhattan and took a visit to Gracie Mansion. The tour guide explained how it is the governor’s place of meetings and how we can also participate in a tea party. All of this was because the Dutch settled New York first. If you see a blue, orange and white flag it represents the Dutch flag and if you take a look at the Met’s baseball team they wear the same colors. I recommend if you have never been to visit the governors house please do you will find it very interesting.

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
Did you know that for every human there are 100,000 insects? Some of you might think this is gross but 5th grade had a great time being scientists and investigating their own insect. At the end of our unit each student had to make a presentation about their insect. It is amazing how many different insects there are and how many more have not been discovered yet. Each insect that was spoken about had a divine purpose and is part of our ecosystem. As 5th grade shared we all learned facts that we didn’t know about each other’s insect.
