The Gingerbread Man

Our preschoolers have enjoyed listening to different retellings of The Gingerbread Man. We read, The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett also Gingerbread Friends and finally the original story of The Gingerbread Man. The favorite seemed to be The Gingerbread Baby. We have had great fun reading and listening to these stories.

The Enlightenment

We studied the Enlightenment this week and amidst a whirlwind of philosophers read snippets from John Locke. We also took time to brush up on Roman Numerals and celebrate Black History Month by reading Langston Hughes and listening to jazz.

Explorers

This week we have started studying European explorers and their effect on the globe. We charted the routes of Dias, Da Gama, Coumbus, Balboa, and Magellan. We read a letter that Columbus sent to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to see first hand what it would be like to discover a new land. Next we will study the conquistadors and the negative ramifications of exploration and expansion.

Don Quijote

Last month was filled with catching-up and study-time for midterm finals. Behold, all things are new -including a whole new quarter. As Don Quijote continues to make arrangements for his long and adventurous journey ahead, we continue to baffle at his innocence, incoherencies, and determination to become a knight. Continue to journey with us, as we visit and learn about the geography, history, and cultures of Central American countries. Don’t forget – speaking and practicing the language at home on a regular basis will help you increase learning and perfecting of Spanish.

Here to journey with you,

Mrs. J-P

Yummy Vocabulary

Last month was filled with catching-up and study-time for midterm finals. Behold, all things are new -including a whole new quarter. Though we have yet to experiment with recipes, we have been learning vocabulary that both cause our mouths to water (such as BBQ chicken, seafood, and rice) and cause us to grimace with foods like carrots, lima beans, and mussels. We’re also finding differences in what to cut, slice, peel, carve, grate, boil, fry, and eat! This month we learn formalities and manners as we demonstrate kindness while telling people what to do, and compare the informal and formal ways in doing so within context. Don’t forget – labeling items will help you increase in learning and remembering the vocabulary words.

Let us continue learning together,

Mrs. Jean-Pierre

Vocabulary

Last month was filled with catching-up and study-time for midterm finals. Behold, all things are new – including a whole new quarter. While we all know how to use the telephone to make a phone call, some don’t know we used quarters to make a phone call from the near-ancient public telephone. Many smile at knowing that the computer mouse is also called the ratón in Spanish – or that computer screen is also called monitor in Spanish, in addition to pantalla –  pan-tahl’-lyah.

An increase in oral communication will also be encouraged this month, as we re-visit the perfectly imperfect past tense as it will be an ongoing practice throughout the Spanish learning.

Don’t forget – labeling items will help you increase in learning, and remembering, the vocabulary words.

Let us continue learning together,

Mrs. Jean-Pierre

Community Helpers

Life is like a box of chocolate! This is our latest theme on our bulletin board. During the month of January we discussed community helpers. Students learned about the different jobs that people do around us. They were also given the opportunity to think about what they would like to be when they grow up. You may read their answers on our bulletin board; I had from cashiers, teachers, doctors to scientist etc… It was very exciting for them and for me.
