Angels
4L has been checking out books and working on SRA’s during library time. We read Bright Christmas before going on break. They enjoyed this book which is the Nativity story being told from the Angels point of view. The book also tells us that angels have been present since the beginning.

Biographies
2B has been enjoying their library time. They especially like the privilege of checking out books for the week. They have been working on SRA’s which are reading comprehension booklets. They have also written mitten book reports that are posted on the library bulletin board. This class loves books, but their favorite genre is Biographies. They loved listening to Helen Keller’s story and to Louis Braille’s biography also.

Teddy Bear Stories
1C has been listening to the story A Bear Called Paddington, which they have enjoyed very much. They have very interesting questions and comments about the story. We talked about why this story is fictional and what actions Paddington performed that are not possible for a teddy bear to do. They really enjoyed this story as it reminded us of Corduroy.

Winter Stories
KV and KT both have enjoyed listening to stories by Jan Brett. She is a great illustrator and Author of children’s books. We read The Mitten and The Hat. Both of these winter stories were appropriate for this season and gave us a chance to talk about how we must dress appropriate for the changes in weather so we can stay healthy. They especially enjoyed The Hat which is about a little porcupine that gets a stocking stuck on his head and the rest of the animals make fun of him. We also talked about teasing and how God does not like us to do that and how He wants us to be kind to one another.

Winter Wonderland
For the month of December we have read books about winter and about Christmas during our reading time. We read My Friend the Snowman. In this book the children learned about the changing seasons and about animals that hibernate for the winter as is the case of marmots which is one of the characters in the story. They also learned that snowmen are only around in Winter and as Spring comes around they melt. We also read On This Special Night a story that tells us about Jesus’ birth from the point of view of a little cat. They loved all the little animals presented in this story.

Fractions
In Math we are entering the world of fractions. We are using egg cartons to demonstrate different fractions. So instead of simply talking about them students can visually see what different fractions looks like, and actually physically manipulate them. We are also looking at the fractions we use every day and may not even realize it. For example, if I looked at a clock and said that it is half past 12 or a quarter to 4 – then what time would it be?

The Holy Spirit
This month in Bible we are studying the Holy Spirit (whom Christ sent for us after He resurrected ascended into Heaven). We are learning that the Father sent Him so that He can be our Comforter, who will give us council and support; our Helper who will give us the boldness to preach, witness, and live our faith; and our Guide who will show us the right way to go as we navigate our way through the world.

December has flown by!
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 6:9
We have learned much about the geography, history, and culture of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, while learning more about the infamous Don Quixote. But the highlight of our journey would be our trip to El Museo de Barrio (Museum of the Neighborhood), where we learned about the artwork that influence so many. During the journey, we had an opportunity to express ourselves through our own artwork in a workshop. Each student was asked to bring to life a theme of an important world event using paint and cardboard.
This year we begin our journey into the country of Argentina, where we shall learn about their passion for the sport of soccer, the art of playwriting, and the art of the flamenco dance. During this time, we will continue our journey into La Mancha with Don Quixote & his sidekick, Sancho.

Vocabulary
Journey with us as our Spanish vocabulary increases to greater heights. I encourage you, if possible, to continue to speak Spanish with your child(ren), as this will enable learning all throughout.

Learning about the kitchen
This new year, we shall begin learning vocabulary words that describe areas of a kitchen. Our mouths will water as we describe and share authentic recipes from the Spanish-speaking world. Perhaps I may even bring in a typical plate or two to enhance learning by bringing the culture into the classroom. Together, we shall to travel Mexico, and Valencia in Spain.
