Computer Fun

The 2nd grade class has been learning how to use the toolbars on Paint. They are practicing using the eraser, fill with color, airbrush and other features. We are even working on inserting free-form select shapes. Recently 2nd grade learned a new program called Pixie where students can create a picture using claymation, stickers or premade backgrounds. The students have enjoyed seeing their picture up on the overhead display as they help teach each other how to use the toolbars and where to find funny pictures and effects.

Resource Room News

January was quite an eventful month: midterms, new students, academic fair, and more. Congratulations to our students whose study skills paid off and who were exempt from any of their midterm exams. Congratulations to those who took their midterms and did well. And congratulations to our 11th graders that passed an RCT or two!

We also welcome 4 new Chinese students and an American Student from New Jersey. We look forward to getting to know them and we’re glad they can join us in the adventure of learning through the last half of the school year.

Part of the adventure is working through all the phases of the academic fair process which helps ideas come to life. This month very interesting topics have been explored and research started. Some of the topics included skate boarding, gymnastics, basketball, terrestrial and jovian planets, the origins of chocolate, baking a cake, Puerto Rican cookies, volcanoes of Hawaii, Hawaiian culture and language, and international flight. Do you get the feeling some students are really hungry and some are ready for warmer weather? We look forward to seeing all these wonderful ideas blossom into research papers, projects, and presentation boards by March 18th.

Obedience shows love

For the month of February our second graders designed their own calendar markers. We had snow girls and butterfly patterns. In our Bible lesson on Moses the students learned that God blesses obedience. Some students confessed that many times they are disobedient to their parents but they now know that if they repent God is faithful to forgive them. For Valentine’s Day we had cupcakes and shared what we will do to show love to our parents or loved ones.

Valentine’s Day Cards & 3D Art

In celebration of Valentines Day, students made handmade valentines day cards for friends and family using a variety of colored construction paper, lace, ribbon, hearts, buttons, glitter and more.

For our Lesson in 3-D…….I began the lesson by placing the following objects in front of the class (aluminum foil, glue, paper and paint) and asked – Which of these can we use to make art? Most students replied glue, paper and paint, but one student said – All of them, and he was right. Art can be made out of everyday objects or even things we’d normally throw in the trash. Students had to first draw the face of their own imaginary character then turn the character into a 3D face glued to cardstock and paint it. The students left never looking at aluminum foil the same.

Winter Wonderland

snowman_hg_clr

We had an amazing time at our Literacy Day: Winter Wonderland. Our Reading Room was transformed into a real life winter scene. We had snowflakes of every size and shape suspended from the ceiling, an igloo constructed by one of our 5th graders and the song Walking in a Winter Wonderland playing in the background as our students entered.  Our Elementary school students sang songs and were read incredible winter storybooks such as The Tiny Snowflake, The Little Snowflake, and Winter Rabbit. We watched a special Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr., which talked about snowflakes. Students drew pictures and answered questions based on what they learned from the video.

However, the best part of the day, and all the students will agree, had to be when upper elementary played a game called Build Your Own Snow woman. Each class was split into three groups and had about two minutes to decorate teachers and aides as snow women. They used a roll of toilet paper and a whole lot of creativity. It was yet another successful, fun Literacy Day for all! Happy Reading!
