We have continued to study the literature from the Spanish Golden Age. We dedicated some time to Maria Zayas y Sotomayor who until recently had been excluded from the Spanish Literature cannon, or “must read” writers. During her time, writers wrote about the knight in shining armor and the damsel in distress. She put a different spin in her heroines and heroes. She wrote of women that were daring, clever, and at times deceiving. She wrote of men that were not gentlemen, who were foolish and dim-witted. We can understand why her writing was excluded for so long.

We have chosen to put it all together. We are emphasizing speaking in real life situations. During this month we practiced different situations and phrases used for the greetings and farewells, introductions and descriptions of people and things. We practiced whether you are talking to one or more person, whether you spoke to people you are familiar with or not. It’s been great to use the language we have been learning for so long.

In 8th grade we looked at the book of Esther a story of providence. We learned to view God as our provider, watchmen and protector. We also watched the movie One Night with a King. We had fun comparing the book with the movie.

In 7th grade we tackled the need for orderliness. In our young peoples culture there is a huge lack of structure. We stared with organizing our Environment then our time and finally our relationships. A little order goes a long way.

In My 6th Grade class we have been talking about spiritual warfare, our enemy the devil and overcoming temptation. The 6th grade class has been really receptive and intrigued by the topic.

5E loves competition and we showed our sportsmanship by competing in our annual Field Day. “Hurray for Evangel Christian School”! We cheered as each student competed in relay races, jump rope, the long jump, softball throw, and the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Patiently we waited to hear the results, and 5E came up on top again! We took home two trophies, one for 2nd place boys and 4th place for the girls. What an exciting day for 5E! To end it all, we all got free hotdogs and some fun in the sun.

Grades 1-3 have been exploring their music heritage and that of their fellow students. Learning the musical cultures of the Caribbean had allowed them to see and hear how God gives us all music to make a joyful noise unto Him!

Our Middle School students finished their songs for the Spring Celebration and they were awesome. The lyrics to the selections were full of the Spirit. The songs chosen for the performance were: “Take Me, Take Me” sung by Manuela Agudelo and Karen Lopez; “The All and All of My Life” sung by Chantel Eaddy, Johannah Gepte, and Melany Farinango; “He Is Here” sung by Jonathan Snape; “God’s In Heaven” sung by Isaiah Sanchez, Adrian Villacorta, Ryan Poonai, Joseph Samaroo, Clyde Dichoso; and “Faith” sung by April Arbotante.

International week was a time where our students learned more about their cultural background. They were also given the opportunity to present their project infront of the class. We cheered on as they proudly gave their presentation. They had fun preparing their projects and, they demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm. They especially enjoyed speaking a few words in their native language. Their most favorite part was sampling the interesting foods from their classmates’ countries. Our class represented Brazil, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, The Philippines, Ecuador, USA, Guyana, Ireland, Colombia, El Salvador, and Bulgaria. It was an interesting learning experience.

The National Junior Honor Society held their last fundraising event on Thursday, May 14. The students of NJHS have been working hard alongside NHS to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This fun fellowship featured students playing games on a Nintendo 64, Xbox 360, and a Wii hooked up to our large projector screen. Other students had fun at our game tables playing board games.
