This week 4L went on a wonderful Field Trip to see a play on the life and heroism of Harriet Tubman. It covered her life as a precocious child in slavery to a brave (if not headstrong) runaway slave, who eventually became a “Conductor” in the Underground Railroad and helped over 300 other slaves escape. She was a true heroine!

In Social Studies our theme was the fight for freedom. We delved into women and African Americans struggle for equal rights. We learned about brave women who fought for suffrage (the right to vote) and men who fought in the Civil War. We also rejoiced over President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that put an end to slavery in all states.

Middle School is learning about the works of Leonardo Da Vinci. They will understand why some of his works are so famous (such as Mona Lisa and the Last Supper). Students will then make a self-portrait, using chalk just like Da Vinci did in the only picture we have of him.

March is the month that tests many things especially discipline and heart. Winter is waning and the end of school getting closer. Students must get recharged out of the winter blues, be persevering at staying on task with schoolwork as well as deal with the usual winter illnesses. March is also an exciting month because of the Academic Fair, March 19th. This is a great time for students to shine who are not always the top of the class academically. It allows creativity and performance skills to blossom. It even benefits those students the most who are willing to work as a team with parent and teachers to study, write about, and present their topic and project of interest. We can all benefit from remembering: Galatians 6:9,”Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” and Ecclesiastes 9:10,”Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

Stop by room 204 and see if you can find the snails. The first graders have been busy reading about snails and making snails. You will find them on the door, if you open the right one.

“Character” was the theme that was emphasized during Ronald’s visit to Evangel on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. The students played games, saw a puppet show and had a great time learning about Trustworthiness, Fairness, Responsibility and Respect. Even the teachers got involved as Ronald told a story and they got a chance to act it out. We are very grateful to McDonald’s for sending Ronald to our PreK – 3 through 6th grade to share how important character is. We can’t wait until he comes to visit us again!!!!!!

Please visit our “Galleries” to view some wonderful pictures.

On March 3rd, Evangel Christian school participated in the annual Read Across America project of the National Education Association, which celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 105th birthday. Dr. Seuss, the man who taught children that reading is fun was born, Theodor Seuss Geidor in Springfield Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904.

On this fun -filled day, Mrs. Jimenez came dressed as the Cat in the Hat, had the most fun of all, as she read several stories to the students written by Dr. Seuss. Hop on Pop, The Cat in The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish were read to Pre-K3- 5th grade.

The students also went home with worksheets and door hangers created in class to remind them about the importance of reading. Our Pre-K 3’s made Cat in the Hat hats and ended their celebration by making their own green eggs and ham the following day. A great big “Thank You” to Mrs. Jimenez for all of her hard work!!!!

Please check out “Galleries” for some amazing pictures.

Our class is participating in a race around the United States. The 3rd Grade class wrote letters to Christian Schools in all 50 States. Each student was given a State and a school to write to. We had a time to “Brain storm” ideas and then they took off writing and drawing pictures. At the close of each letter, the children ended their letter with “God Bless You” and “Write me back”. That hand extended was so Christ like, and it was a blessing to me.

Evangel has two new teams that have enthusiastically come aboard, bursting with fresh ideas. Each team has re-named their edition of the paper. The high school edition will now be called “Cutting Edge”, and the middle school edition will be called “Eagle Eye”. We look forward to our first edition coming out soon.

Evangel’s freshmen took a journey through 6 short pieces of literature in order to investigate the use of 7 major literary elements: plot, point of view, characterization, style, setting, symbolism, and theme. Using that as a foundation for the wonderful world of reading logs, vocabulary journals, and Socratic discussion, students will begin reading Ted Dekker’s “Blink of an Eye”.
