For the past two weeks the students have been studying about early exploration in Europe. They’ve studied the lives of Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, and the Spanish Conquistadors. Students have been able to see how past historical figures and groups have helped to influence society, whether for the good or for the bad.

We have spent the first weeks of school learning about where civilization began, The Fertile Crescent. Student’s spent several days studying the Sumerian Civilization and learned about important inventions such as the wheel, plow and calendar system. Through this study students have learned how past technological inventions have helped to improve society. Understanding this truth, students created their own invention such as an efficient toilet seat for the elderly, a double sided toothbrush, and notebook taggers that allow students to identify their textbook without actually opening it.

The first several weeks of Bible have been exciting. Students have been learning about the importance of God’s word. We have studied the character of Josiah, specifically his great leadership ability and obedience to God. Students spent time interviewing people in leadership positions such as their youth pastor, gym coach, and even Mrs. Marko, Evangel’s school principal.

We have had a great time in Pre-K 4 so far. The students made special handprints in paint with the verse Proverbs 22:6 written on them for the Back to School night.
Miss Herrera
My name is Rosa Herrera and I am the Pre-K 4 Substitute Teacher. I graduated from Monroe College with my AA and am now working on my BA at Nyack. This is my first year at Evangel. I have worked at Yonkers Christian Academy as a teacher assistant and substitute teacher for many years. I love the Lord and serve at my church as a Sunday School teacher and in the dance ministry.
It’s an exciting time in the Middle School English department as we actively pursue and interest in reading and writing. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have learned the importance of taking response notes over the past couple of weeks to prepare them for the demands of reading novels and studying for their classes. Every time the students read, they know to circle, underline, highlight, doodle, and whatever else they like to make them a part of the story. Why are they doing this? To become active readers or in simpler terms, to have a conversation with the story they are reading. It is Mrs. Candelier’s desire that this will foster an appreciation for written language.
This year we will be learning the numbers 1-10 and all the letters of the alphabet. We will do so by playing educational games and doing fun and creative activities!
Mrs. Rivera
My name is Desiree Rivera and I am the new Pre-K 3 teacher. This is my first year working at Evangel and my first year working as a head teacher. Growing up I always had a desire and passion of becoming a teacher. I love working with children, especially in a Christian school because I am able to express and interpret the love of Jesus Christ. Not only through His Word, but by the way that I speak to the children and portray His genuine love.
My name is Lysette Ramos. This is my first year working at Evangel Christian School. I am the new cooking elective teacher. Cooking is not just a form of art, but also involves socialization, math, creativity, hands-on learning and health awareness. My goal is to help those students who enjoy cooking learn to use it as a way of demonstrating God’s love. Some of the things we have cooked so far are crumb cake, lemon chicken pasta, turkey bacon wraps, and quick and easy salads.
Sneakers play a major role in pre teen and teenage fashion today; unfortunately the cost to be in style is high. I wanted to give students the opportunity to move away from the highly circulated name brands and create an affordable and fashionable pair of sneakers. Each student will leave this class with a personalized one of a kind pair of sneakers, and when someone says “Those sneakers are hot, who are they by?” They can proudly say “me.”
