Our Math classes transitioned using visual mathematics along with math computation and word problems from textbooks. This was to prepare the students for SATs and Finals. 6th & 7th – Math curriculum consisted of Visual Mathematics I. Students were introduced to the art of questioning. This is to produce thinking.
8th – Math Curriculum consisted of Visual mathematics II. This was challenging. The students were using high levels of critical thinking. Middle School students were challenged to make observation and work with manipulatives to prove their theories and thought process. Students worked in groups and in pairs. Later in the year, middle school math transitioned to Math Computation. Visual Math helped prepare them for computation from the perspective of understanding mathematical concepts and not just traditional rote memory of computations. The highlight of 7th grade was in one class I had a piece of chocolate cake and I spoon fed each student. God demonstrated math for us that day in how you can divide one item into a number of parts. All of middle school created their own math games.
In Social Studies, we have learned some interesting facts about Brazil, China, and Japan. The differences between America and other countries are the most fun to learn about. For Science we have been doing some hands on experiments. Our most favorite science topic has been watching our ladybugs grow in Lady Bug Land.
Math! Math! and more Math! Well, Math has been a challenge for the students and teachers. Our new Math curriculum has given us a new way of exploring numbers. Through games and partner work, we have investigated this subject.
We all had a nice time in our trip to Green meadows Farm. We learned about Native American Indians and birds of prey and enjoyed watching other animals at the farm.
We plan to end our year with making a class fruit salad and vegetable salad and also share our favorite game from home at our year end party.
Well 3C, we did it! Go have fun and enjoy your summer. You deserve it. Love Mrs. Calma
It has been with great pleasure to be with the Third grade. Each child has a different gift and talent that they possess which made our group so much fun. One thing that they do have in common is that their hearts are tremendous. The love and care that they show each other when something goes wrong bears witness to all that we can witness the Kingdom of Heaven through the eyes of our little ones. Even in the midst of enjoying each other, 3C has been busy practicing our writing skills while creating and sharing interesting stories about their favorite animals, describing their most enjoyed meals and what exciting and fun things they would do if they were invisible.
The 11th graders became savvy investors by studying the stock market. They invested money (not real of course J ), made trades, and researched companies. They also ran a mock t-shirt business and competed against other teams to see which team made the wisest decisions and the most profits.
In chemistry, students tested household items to determine which were acids and which were bases. They prepared an indicator by boiling purple cabbage and saving the juice. They then tested common household items such as soap, vinegar, antacid tablets, and soda to name a few.
This semester, the 12th grade Physics students have been learning about electricity and magnetism. They constructed series and parallel circuits and determined which is best for Christmas lights. They also used iron filings and compasses to map the magnetic field of a bar magnet.
Fifth grade experienced an amazing get-a-way when they traveled to Spruce lake on their annual fifth grade retreat. The retreat was an exciting event that brought the whole class closer together and they got to know each other in a much more personal way.
This year the reading lab has experienced many fun activities. . Middle School created a media collage and presented many pieces of poetry and short stories to the whole class. Many videos were presented to the class to introduce a topic. . Sixth grade acquired many skills for reading that was highlighted in the daybook. Seventh grade explored the origins of the Harlem Renaissance through the writings of Langston Hughes. And last but not least, eighth grade shared memorable memories through heartfelt reflections of short stories and poems all provided through the Daybook. All in all, the year was a fun filled adventure for each grade.
This year the reading lab has experienced many fun activities. The fifth grade students presented a play in the fellowship hall and all of the elementary school students were invited. Our 9th grade class of Advanced Spanish went on a trip to a Spanish restaurant. Before the restaurant, we had a small tour of the neighborhood where they saw different markets they have been learning about in class. It was very gratifying to hear them talk about the things they had learned in class. At the restaurant, the students had to order in Spanish because our waitress did not speak English. They were able to put into practice what they had learned in class.
