All in all we had a great year. The highlight for the kids was the Art show. Everyone who attended from the outside was amazed at the work of art they were able to do. This led to the Annual art festival and our students did very well to having the privilege to display their work in First National Savings Bank. They were so happy to see what our students could do. It was a true pleasure having each and every one of them.

Students who participate in the Afterschool dance and vocal lessons put on an end of the year recital. They did an amazing job.

We had a wonderful Spring Program. Elementary students danced to Shout to the Lord, with streamers. The middle school danced to Go Fast, and high school danced and ministered the songs that they did in Hawaii. The high school electives also danced to I’m Free.

When thinking about athletes the first thing that usually does not come to mind is three piece suits and elegant dress. But, to celebrate their accomplishments and a hard fought season, the athletes of Evangel got together for their annual sports banquet. During the banquet, athletes are recognized for their commitment, dedication, and hard work. They put in countless hours of training and worked tirelessly to not only better themselves, but their teammates as well. What made this Banquet special was the relationship and bonds that these athletes shared with each other. True relationships are not formed over night; they take time to build and time to grow. They are rarely perfect. They have ups and downs and plenty of growing pains, but it is through these experiences that bonds are strengthened and lasting memories are made.

We made it to the front cover and page 16 of our local paper, wonderful! See full Gazette article attached.
We want to thank all the parents, staff and local community members for your support of our school’s 2nd ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW on Thursday April 18th 2013. In a time when art programming is being cut from many public schools due to budget cuts, etc… ECS remains committed to continue with the arts programming even with our tight budgets.(we operate on 1/3 the budget of the public school system) Your donations help in making this possible.
In addition to enriching the community and extending goodwill throughout the school the afternoon raised $1,549 for the Art Department, $200 of which will go to six students as prize winners. Special thanks to our PTF- Parent Teacher Fellowship , First Central Savings Bank our official sponsor, Parisi Bakery, Dunkin Donuts (on Broadway) CTown Supermarket (on Broadway) for their donations and support of local education in the community! Our winner’s art work will be displayed in First Central Savings Bank in Astoria for one month. Spirit week has been a blast this year. Each day students dressed up in a new theme to earn points for their class. On Monday, students came dressed like their friends for “twin day.” Some friends came in groups of four and five all dressed alike. The most memorable twin outfit was a group of our senior girls that dressed in pink hello kitty pajamas. Tuesday was filled with more fun as students went all out for “career day.” They were dressed like nurses, doctors, fashion designers, military and the list goes on and on. The most well thought out outfit was a student who came dressed like her favorite teacher. She had such great detail in her costume, it was comical. Wacky Wednesday brought out some interesting characters as students came in all forms of mix-matched outfits. Teachers also had fun with this one. Our traditional “spirit day” Thursday had so much excitement during the pep rally. For the first time in Evangel history, we had a drum cadence set up during the pep rally by three of our students who played and got the crowd pumped up during our varsity vs. staff/alumni basketball game. It was a great game and the week ended in a great “time” as students came decked out in various decades. The students came dressed up in 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Mr. Hernandez was the most talked about outfit as he came dressed in his leather jacket and 50’s style hairdo.
Other than dressing up during the week, students also competed in games during the week to earn points for their class. Some of the games included, root beer chug-a-lug, tug-a-war, candy relay, cracker whistle relay and many more. The students really went out this year and the most talked about game since the start of games two years ago is the egg toss. With eggs flying through the air, it’s always amazing to see the one team who never breaks the egg. It came down to our seniors and sophomores this year, but the seniors pulled it out. Spirit week has been a blast this year and both our JV and Varsity boys basketball teams came out with two victories this week as we kick off our fall and winter sports season.

Evangel Christian School has done an amazing job of working together in the days following Sandy’s aftermath. There have been numerous clothing, food and supply donations brought in as well as monetary giving. God has blessed our students to be able to hand out these donations first hand. Our 10th, 11th and 12th grade students had the privilege of purchasing food through the numerous donations to cook for people in the lower east side of Manhattan who have been without power and are not able to purchase meats at this time because the main grocery store in the neighborhood has been so badly damaged. They also were able to hand out all the clothes and canned food items that were brought in. As soon as the tables were set up outside with all the clothes, blankets and supplies, people came from all the surrounding blocks and were thankful for all the blessings they received. The students had the opportunity through three different days to feed around 1000 people in the neighborhood. Our students worked so hard and many came back saying how the day of serving impacted them.
Evangel was also able to go to Coney Island Gospel Assembly to minister to those without power and water who are devastated. We were able to clean 300 bags of mud out of their basement. We were able to serve the food we made to nearly 500 volunteers. We were able to disinfect their entire church so they can now conduct services.
We were overwhelmed with the generosity from our school family. Our parents and partners have gone “above and beyond” to make these outreaches happen. We continue to pray for those that have experienced loss. We are so happy that we are able to help and minister to those in need!
Evangel parents, staff and students also bought gifts for Hurricane Sandy Victims that were given out on December 23rd.
Our middle school and high school students had the privilege of hearing from students that are part of Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The director of student ministries, Dr. Richard Kidd, and Director of Discipleship, Jason Peaks, brought a group of young adults that were on fire for God as they shared through a powerful time of worship and the Word. Our students were very receptive to what they had to say and were encouraged by the message of hope in Jesus Christ that was brought.
The National day of “See you at the Pole” has not occurred at this school in a number of years and we were happy to see our students take a stand and come out earlier than normal for prayer in taking a stand for our school, city and nation. Students formed various groups and prayed with one another and then they came together to worship and pray for more specific needs of our student body and school. While staff was there in support, this was entirely student led. God is doing great things through our students and we are excited to see where He will take them next!
