As we continue reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe the students were asked to draw their favorite parts of the story. I had pictures of wardrobes, fauns, the White Witch, and centaurs. It is amazing how every student liked a different part of the story.

Evangel’s sophomores continue their travels through Oliver Twist analyzing the forces of Good vs. Evil, pondering the implications of Nature vs. Nurture, and assessing Dickens’ use of satire throughout the novel. They will be wrapping up in the next couple of weeks and concluding with their own satirical piece which evaluates an issue in society today. Compiled, the individual essays will create a satirical magazine! Look for it in February!

Learning verb conjugations have been our toughest challenge this month, especially the imperfect past tense. The students were a little confused at first, but finally have gotten a good grasp of it. They are trying hard to use it in our classroom conversations. We have started reading the Psalms in Spanish aloud during our devotional time to get accustomed to hearing the language and practice listening skills.

Half way there! The students are half way to their global regents in June. As we prepare for the midterms, the students were amazed at how much information we had covered already this year. We finished out this semester discussing the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. This was interesting because we were able to discuss how the ideas of the Enlightenment had greatly influenced the development of our own country. At this time in history as we start a new Presidency, one surrounded by hope and excitement, we can discuss why our government was set up the way it was and understand not just how but why. Our country would not be the way it is today if it had not been for some of the great philosophers of that time (Locke, Montesquieu, and Voltaire).

The 10th Grade Geometry class will choose topics such as Cubism, Tesselations, Mosaics and Optical Art to complete a research paper. They will type a one to two page bibliography of the artist they choose. They will also include the contributions made from the artist. Then they will construct a piece of art work in the form of their choice. Students will also need to prepare a powerpoint presentation to accompany their report and project.

Happy New Year!
We look forward to a new year of hope – hope in the Lord and assurance that God has a perfect plan for each student.
January is an exciting time with new goals set for a new year and yet a difficult month with mid terms on the way, homework to stay on top of and the Academic Fair coming. In Resource Room we will be checking our goals and finding strategies with which we can realistically meet those goals. Now is the time for students, parents and teachers to truly work together as a team to help students set good goals and begin to achieve them. In I Corinthians 12: 24-27 the Bible says, “But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

The Advanced Spanish class recently finished a project. The students made videos and presented their own Spanish Newscast. They were very creative. The students really worked hard. We are now starting a chapter about the human body and vocabulary pertaining to a doctor’s office. We plan to make diagrams and brochures for our own “health clinic” promoting good health.

10th grade has been discussing the differences between being a disciple and believer of Jesus. Some questions that I have challenged the students with have been, what does is take to be a Christian? What does Christ expect from us? What does God hate? And how do we step forward toward becoming an effective leader? I am so blessed to have your children in my Bible class. They have a firm grasp on the basics of their faith, so my goal is to help bring more maturity and understanding to them. My prayer is for these students to have a true relationship with Jesus so that when they face the real world they will not be shaken. Our next lesson will be based on the B-Attitudes and I am excited to see these characteristics to be portrayed in their lives in this New Year!
During December we have enjoyed sharing our talents in Christmas programs that portrayed the true meaning of Christmas; we have found encouragement from secret angels; and have even enjoyed the first real snow of the season. Students can learn that they have the ability to bless others and can give the gift of themselves. James 1 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth that we might be a kind of first fruits of all He created”. I pray that the Christmas break brings many blessings to each family. We certainly have God’s goodness to look forward to in the New Year.
