Students worked on a project using magazine pictures to create postcards. They wrote to a friend or family member about a vacation.

The sophomores just finished their last section on the Cold War and Post World War II, the students were very excited to finally be finished with Mr. Fowler’s note packets. Due to the close proximity in time between what we are studying and the time we live in now, the students were able to discuss and see how they are a part of history. We discussed issues such as the environment (global warming) and terrorism (impact of 9/11) and how the students saw the impact of those things on their lives. Now as the school year comes to a close we are in review mode as the students prepare for their first Social Studies regents. The students have been practicing both their essays and test taking skills during class and extra credit sessions after school. I have confidence they will do well this June.

Students in Spanish class are learning about the airport. They are learning the different jobs and places in an airport. They are also learning the job names of the flight crew and the words describing how to board and disembark from a plane.

As we continue to emphasize the spoken language, we have revisited our vocabulary and added new words to our repertoire in order to give and request personal data. We had a lot of fun as we made skits of situations in which we introduced ourselves and asked for information of others. We also made a project that dealt with the activities we like to do, depending on the seasons. The students who are very good at communications excelled in the skits, while others excelled in their very creative projects.

We have continued with the spoken language. We are now concentrating on giving and getting directions in getting from point A to point B. We are also studying commands, because they are most used in this task. We have set “scavenger hunts” around the school, following directions backwards and forwards finding the beginning point or end point of our directions. It’s been lots of fun.

We have chosen to put it all together. We are emphasizing speaking in real life situations. During this month we practiced different situations and phrases used for the greetings and farewells, introductions and descriptions of people and things. We practiced whether you are talking to one or more person, whether you spoke to people you are familiar with or not. It’s been great to use the language we have been learning for so long.

This is the 1st year that we have decided to incorporate soccer into the high school P.E. curriculum. Students are more enthusiastic and excited to play this sport not because they are experts at it, but quite the opposite. They are all novices. Those students who excelled at team handball, volleyball, and basketball are now trying to adjust to feet-eye coordination instead of hand-eye coordination. They welcome this new facet of the game and enjoy improving themselves.

April was a busy month in the computer lab. One of the highlights was when the students were able to participate in Administrators Professional Day. Middle School and High School students made cards using Microsoft Publisher and later were presented to the staff. The students expressed their gratitude to these hard working individuals and used the computer lab to make these memories.

10th grade has recently been studying the essential qualities for spiritual leadership. Learning how to deal and understand different personalities is important, but being sensitive and caring is the key. We recently had a little demonstration with the help of Crystal Johnson, Seth Bujosa, and Alahna Dones showing the class the importance of humility in our lives whether we are a leader or not. The class came up with different situations we all deal with everyday that may at times overwhelm us, and for each situation Crystal was wrapped around with duck tape binding her together. Eventually all the circumstances of life became unbearable resulting in Crystal being unable to move (which everyone found funny). Seth and Alahna had to pick Crystal up in order to move her showing the students that we cannot do everything on our own, and a piece of humble pie every once in a while is definitely needed.

Students in Geometry Math Class are working on research projects. They will choose from three to five topics and complete a written essay. Then they will complete their assignment with a math project and create their own math game.
