International Week

China. India. Mexico. Brasil. Nepal. Switzerland. Peru. Spain. These are just some of the 73 countries beautifully represented by our students and staff and Evangel Christian School. We held our semi-annual International Week to celebrate the heritages of our families. This year, our celebration took place from October 19th through October 23rd. Throughout the week, students had opportunities to research one or more countries that their families are from, present objects or pictures from their country to their classmates, and dress in their flag’s color or in an outfit native to their land. The highlight was definitely the food sharing portion of International Week where students brought in a dish to share with their peers. From “arroz con pollo” to “roti” and “flan” to a “guarana” drink, both students and staff alike appreciated the delicious and rich culture they got to partake in. We culminated our week by bringing students and staff down to the huge world map located right beyond our main entrace where they put a pin in the city and country they are from. On Friday, the last day of the event, we held a special missions-oriented chapel where an alumnus, Joseph Lee, talked about his parents who are missionaries to Indonesia and showed a slide presentation of their work there. Check out the wonderful pictures in “galleries” and be blessed as you see the excitement on the student’s faces as they show pride in their heritage!

Since we are learning vocabulary associated with food this month, we have been doing some exercises that deal with the same. The students had to write their favorite recipe in Spanish including ingredients and preparation process and then spend one class day tasting the delicious dishes. Everyone brought a dish in and shared it with their classmates as they presented it orally in class. I must say it was a satisfying class!

What if you had the opportunity to build your very own castle? What would it look like? How would you defend it? That’s exactly what our 10th grade global classes had the opportunity to do as we we studied the unit on the Rise of Europe. We discussed the beginnings of Feudalism and the Manor economy. Students also looked at the lives of peasants, knights and the Germanic Tribes.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once said, “One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team.” Teamwork is just one lesson that our students need to learn in order to become successful in life. Whether they go on to become a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, business man, teacher, etc, they need to learn how to get along and work side by side with their peers despite their differences. Through sports, students learn that they are just one part of a whole and in order for the team to function they all need to contribute.

In the month of October, the English 10th grade class has been making our way through “Oliver Twist”, by Charles Dickens. Getting the students to spend time at home reading the book was challenging at first. As we discussed the novel in class more and accompanied the discussions with a short viewing of the movie here and there, the interest of the students was sparked and questions flooded the room. Exciting class discussions have borne from this novel, which included the life and experiences of a child and the treatment of orphans. Watching the movie allowed an expression of shared pain and sympathy. It is so exciting. At times the movie is the only thing that is desired, but we must – read on, at home and as a class! I have had the students use their creativity to start writing their own introductions of the book. Some humorous, some sarcastic, some filled with questions and all exceptional. I hope to include some of their own acting and drama with a narrator and judges, sort of like a mini-production. I’ll propose a choice of activities and we’ll see what the class chooses.

In 10th grade Algebra, we have been studying the properties of exponents. I have been using my new SMART board to show the students the way exponents work. The students are doing a great job learning these concepts.

Greetings again from the Middle School and High School Resource Room!

We just finished “Back-to-School Night” for both middle and high school and I had a great time meeting both new and old parents. It looks like Resource is on it’s way to working at facilitating team effort between teacher, parent and student. The parents I met are active in their child’s education and will be a great mix of help, accountability and encouragement to them. The time with them was both informative and important for student success. Our concentration with the students this month is on self-management and productivity in class. Note taking skills are revisited and expounded on to improve student notes as a tool for studying for tests. We have a lot to look forward to as God’s plan for each student unfolds.

This year began with a BANG!! Students had a chance to get to know each other and come together as a community of learners as they began to explore the Spanish language. We have been focusing on several topics such as: describing people, school subjects, numbers and telling time in Spanish. Verb conjugations and class conversations has also been an emphasis in order to develop good speaking skills. The class is very eager to learn!

Fitness Workouts and Circuit Training

September has been a month dedicated to fitness workouts. Students began their second week of P.E. with circuit training, where they went through various stations such as pushups, sit ups, hurdles, cones, wall squats, etc. Students not only learned the proper way to exercise, but they began to realize why exercising is so important in their daily lives.
