The Juniors have been working with growth and decay functions. They have calculated how fast their money grows and the depreciation on a new car. We finished our topic with an M&M lab in which the students generated the data for their own growth and decay functions. When they were done they happily ate all their manipulatives.

12th Grade has been discussing the government’s role in the economy. This has been a great time to discuss this as we watch our country go through one of America’s toughest economical times. Many of the students have come in with questions referring to our current state and how Obama and his administration are going to deal with America’s future. We have just began to discuss how free-market economies work and as we discuss this we are about to see all the various parts of the business cycle in our recent history. The students will be researching Obama’s plan for the economy and making posters which either demonstrate a “for” or “against” stance. I believe this is helping the students understand this difficult time in our history.

10th Grade has been discussing World War I; never before in history has an event impacted so many people. We have gone over causes and results; the discussion of war has given us a lot of opportunities to relate it to America’s present situation with Iraq and Afghanistan. The students had to develop their own poster illustrating what propaganda is. Many of the students came up with very interesting illustrations and slogans to illustrate what was occurring at this time in history. The students will be moving into the period between the World Wars, and before we know it the end of the year and the regents will be upon us.

9th Grade just began a unit on Imperialism. Everywhere in the world the affects of Imperialism can be seen both in looking at the past and the present. The class has been discussing and reading about Imperialism and how it affected nations like China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, etc. We have had some great discussions on the positives and negatives of Imperialism and looking at it from both perspectives.

10th grade has been using their artistic skills in the computer lab this month as they have been designing pictures and drawings. Many students thought they knew everything about Computer Art, but found out you can draw beautiful abstract paintings and unique drawings.

Singing, Dancing, Eating, Rapping, Performing, and Sharing were all a part of our Academic Fair which took place on Thursday, March19 th, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. What an exciting evening it was for all – students and visitors alike. Students in all grades had been working feverishly since January on their projects and reports and as you walked aroung the school the aroma of wonderful foods filled the air. Foods from India, Africa, Guatemala, and many, many more countires were represented. THe sounds of students talking with visitors, projects humming, music playing, and students reciting were all sounds that filled that evening. There were many different sections to the Fair: Technolgy, Dance, Art, Science, History, Health, Bible, English, Home Ec., Countries, and many more. Many students dressed up to represent a certain person, or country; there were also scientific dissections to witness. Students were so excited as they got the chance to explain their projects and research to our visitors – nearly 1,000! What a great job all teachers, staff, parents and students did! We applaud you and can’t wait until next year!

shop for them in Spanish. We also learned the Spanish names for different
types of stores like: supermercado, hypermercado, joyeria, panaderia
and so on. Now we have begun a chapter called “Los Pasatiempos” in
which the students will learn to describe their favorite passtime and learn
about different passtimes in Spanish-speaking countries.

entitled “Viajes Fantasticos”. We will be doing some group reading,
as well as some independent reading to enhance our knowledge of
the Spanish language.
