Students were involved in heavy discussions of many historical issues to help improve their critical thinking and analytical skills. Students would often debate on social issues on specific topics in history which enhanced further discussions in the class. But more importantly we approached these social issues from a Christian perspective.

True Beauty
In Art Elective this year learned about how beauty is depicted. We created masks to demonstrate that beauty is really In the eye of the beholder. Also that it is not necessarily what we see on the outside but what is in side. We used the word of God to help us and we used the story of Beauty in the Beast to demonstrate this aspect. They also learned how to do decoupage with paper and glass candy dishes.

Make Wise Choices
In Bible this year, 11th and 12th graders learned about variety of topics from their three teachers. Most recently, they delved into the study of the Old Testament, focusing particularly on the book of Genesis and fitting familiar stories about Creation, the Fall, the Flood, and the Patriarchs into their historical contexts. In the end of the year, students participated in a special unit called Navigator (11) and Excel (12), during which they discussed how to make choices that glorify God in our hearts, bodies, and minds.

We had a wonderful Spring Program. Elementary students danced to Shout to the Lord, with streamers. The middle school danced to Go Fast, and high school danced and ministered the songs that they did in Hawaii. The high school electives also danced to I’m Free.

Lets Get Fit
Students had fun doing relay races with obstacle courses. They also did their annual physical fitness test. At the end of the school year we had a field day at the park.

We started in January by reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and then A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. During Oliver Twist, discussions focused on the theme that in order to have a successful society, we need to love and care for one another in the way that Christ shows us. Students worked on group projects investigating the Victorian time period to better understand the novel and characters. Students researched and organized mock-newspapers on Victorian England. During A Doll’s House, students focused on the roles of men and women and we discussed God’s standards. Students ended the year with a unit on poetry and a unit on short stories, where we looked at different poetic devices and aspects of short stories.

Good Leaders
After Christmas break, our 9th graders worked on The Pearl by John Steinbeck and Antigone by Sophocles. During The Pearl, class discussion centered on the themes of greed and anti-imperialism found in the story. Students wrote research papers on the colonization of Mexico to better understand the characters in the story and their motives. We started Antigone by first looking at a short excerpt from Plato’s Republic and what makes a good king or ruler. We decided that a good king is one that listens to the advice of others and makes decisions in the best interest of the people. We then investigated what the Bible had to say about leadership. The class also analyzed the decisions of the characters in Antigone and what makes a person heroic, while also discussing the sacrifice of Christ.

Geometry
In our geometry course, one of the applied projects we did was constructing bridges out of Popsicle and tooth-picks. We demolished the bridges while using a load cell to measure (in pounds) the amount of tensional force the bridge could withstand. A score was awarded to each team’s bridge by calculating the ratio of the weight of the bridge to the max load before collapse.

Science Labs
In our science Lab we covered a lot of different topics. One of the first labs we did in September was to draw the Earth’s interior to scale.
Another lab we did later in May was called “Stepping out the Solar System.” In this lab students had to research one of the planets and report their findings to the class. Each student had to calculate how far from the Sun their planet would lie, using a scale of one meter = one million miles.

Future Job
Besides our class time discussions the most memorable time was the assignment given at the end of the year. Each student was to create a presentation via Power Point or Poster Board of their future dream job. They were required to report on the following: Short biography of someone in the field, career entails, requirements, what makes a person valuable, visuals of the place, their opinion, their current preparations, create a personal affirmation, and scriptures for the journey. I was very excited to inspire the students to greatness and very pleased with the results I received. Each student’s project was quite unique and had their personal touch to it. They were very proud to present these projects to their classmates and many of them were already practicing some of the requirements for their future job. I believe that each student will in some capacity be doing something in the field that they researched and will do extremely well. Making things visual makes it more of a reality.
