Integers

The sixth graders finished out the year strong tackling integers and reviewing for their state tests and finals. They have worked hard all year and were able to have some fun playing fraction games after their final.

¡Llegamos al fín del año!

This year, 8th Grade was introduced to conjugation forms of regular, irregular, and stem-changing verbs in the present tense. As cultural highlights included comparing and contrasting differences between American football and fútbol (soccer), we also delved into, and became enthralled by, a small community in an isolated section of Colombia where students were required to take a zip-line as a form of daily travel to school. With Middle School’s foundational Spanish completed, the fun has just begun, as High School field trips including theater, restaurants, and museums will take learning the culture and Spanish language to a whole new level. Looking forward to it.

¡Llegamos al fín del año!

From comparing schools in the Spanish-speaking world to ours, and contrasting between the Sweet 16 and Quinceañera celebrations, and the varying aspects within Spanish language itself, it was an amazing culturally-filled year. The best is yet to come. See you next year as we continue to tackle verb conjugations, and form sentences and phrases in Spanish. Looking forward to it.

¡Llegamos al fín del año!

This year, 6th Grade was introduced to the wonderful world of Spanish. Through Beginner Spanish, they have learned new vocabulary relating to restaurants and cafés, school supplies, seasons, months of the year, days of the week, numbers, and so much more. Foods and cultural highlights were brought forth in tangible ways as we celebrated Hispanic Heritage months, Cinco de Mayo and las fiestas del año. The journey has just begun as we continue our journey into the Spanish-speaking world next year.  Looking forward to it

Abstinence

In our 8th and 9th grade classes, we were given the opportunity this year to implement an abstinence program. We were able to sit in a chapel where the author of the book spoke about the program. In both 8th and 9th grade we tackled the important issue of purity and the reason why God wants us to remain on track to achieve our dreams. The lessons were really impactful. On my Final exam of the year, I asked them to define the most meaningful lesson and to my surprise 78% of both classes cited that this particular lesson meant the most to them. All in all during the course of this year I have seen a steady growth in the area of God in the lives of the middle school and the High school students which I taught. Glory be to God.

What Did You Say

In our 7th grade classes one of the most memorable lessons was the lesson about learning to be a good listener. As teenagers, they had to learn the importance of why God gave us two ears and only one mouth. It was a riot to watch the students interact during a lesson where they had to guess what their partner was saying and write it down. The key was that the person speaking had tape over their mouth making it difficult to speak and hear what they were saying. It was a great object lesson, one that I don’t think they will soon forget.

Pride vs Humility

This year in Bible class we studied a whole range of different characters as well as things we should apply to our daily lives. In one such lesson for the 6th grade we learned about Absalom and how his pride was his downfall and we need to be humble people. Even if we feel we are better than others, God’s word teaches us that He loves humility and despises pride. The students loved this lesson as we acted out the life of Absalom, in an object lesson.

Speed Drills

The sixth graders are a spirited group of students who love working together and helping each other with math problems. They enjoy doing daily speed drills for their do-now. These drills reinforce foundational math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division). We have seen how the properties of addition and multiplication can also be applied to decimals and fractions.

How Shopping Involves Math

The seventh graders have enjoyed learning how the math concepts that they learned in 6th grade have real-world applications. At the beginning of the year, the students all chose one occupation that uses math and conducted research about that job that they shared with the class. Throughout the year, they have enjoyed learning how astronomers use scientific notation to simplify their work, how architects use precise measurements to design buildings, and how chefs use fractions and proportions to create delicious recipes. While learning about the uses of percentages last month, the class particularly enjoyed a Christmas shopping activity. Various items were set up around the room in different states. Each item had a different price. Some items were discounted, some had a sales tax percentage, and some had both a city and sales tax. The students had to calculate the final price of all the items after the discounts were subtracted and taxes were added. Most students chose to shop in Delaware, where there is no sales tax!

Debate Team

During the first quarter, the students did a debate about imperialism and whether or not it is a morally justifiable foreign policy. This quarter, they are working on a debate about FDR’s New Deal and the general effectiveness of welfare programs. Eighth graders tend to love a good argument, so formal debates are a great opportunity for them to practice civility, exercise logic, support their premises with evidence, and learn to work together on debate teams.
