Spiritual Emphasis Week

Spiritual Emphasis week was by far the best we have ever seen here at Evangel.  We thank God for the Spiritual guidance of our staff who helped prepare and speak for this chapel but it was the moving of the spirit of God through our kids that made this one so unique.  The students took to heart the things that were spoken of in chapel and ran with it.  They stayed late, past their school day and continued to pray and worship in the altar.  It was an amazing site.  Many times, when a movement takes place like this, students go back to their normal lives but our students have gone the extra mile.  They have begun their own facebook and twitter page called “be the spark.”  On this page, students encourage one another with scripture and more ideas of how to grow in the Lord.  They have also begun morning prayer and lunch time bible study. They recently ordered bracelets with “be the spark” on them and are now selling them to the entire student body.  God is continuing to do great things through our students as the spark was lit during Spiritual Emphasis week.

Elementary Spiritual Emphasis Week was a great time as we learned that with God ANYTHING is possible. Through bible stories of faith and purpose, our students learned:

  1. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, TRUST GOD!
  2. NO MATTER HOW YOU FEEL, TRUST GOD!
  3. NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE DO…TRUST GOD!
  4. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS… TRUST GOD!
  5. NO MATTER WHEREYOU ARE… TRUST GOD!

Why it Matters:

Adults may feel like kids have it easy- and by comparison, maybe they do. But every child has faced, or is facing something that seems impossible. For some, it’s falling asleep in a dark room while they imagine monsters under the bed. Other kids are dealing with intense peer pressure or unstable homes. Some kids might just need the courage to stand up for their faith or to obey God’s word. Those seemingly impossible tasks can seem overwhelming to kids…until they discover that EVERYTHING is possible with God!

Dance Elective

Spring Celebration

For Elementary we were working on a dance routine for the spring celebration. We learned how to work in groups. The song we worked on was Trading my sorrows. We learned sign language and working in pairs and stretching lines. It was very interesting. I left the streamers and flags for last because I wanted them to learn the dance steps first. Then at the end of the song, they learned together how to move the flags and stemmers together. Lastly we did the intro of the song and put the whole dance routine together. They did a great job.

Dance Elective

The students in 3rd-5th grade Dance Elective only had 30 minutes each rehearsal to practice their steps to the song they danced to for the Christmas program. They worked on sign language and dance steps, and then worked on how to move the flags and streamers and then put it all together. The song the students danced to was, He Reigns.

Elementary Spring Celebration

dsc_1404

Our Elementary Spring Celebration took place on Sunday, May 3rd. What a wonderful celebration it was; singing, dancing, drama, testimonies, and Scripture verses were all part of this fantastic event. Pre-K3, Pre-K4 and Kindergarten sang, “Clap your hands all you people” and a Jewish song that means we bring you peace. First and Second Grades sang “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.” The Junior Dance Team danced to “Holy Spirit, Reign Down” dressed in white and purple with purple and silver streamers. “The Eighth Dwarf” is the adorable play that the Junior Drama Team performed at the celebration. Through this drama we learned that God made us and loves us all, despite our shortcomings. At the end of the play the dwarfs asked Snow White and the eighth dwarf, forgetful, to dance with them to a fantastic song entitled, “I am not Forgotten.” To finish the celebration our Junior Chorus sang “He Knows My Name” and the Junior Dance Team danced to a song about God being our Strong Tower. A big thank you to all students and staff for making this celebration so spectacular and glorifying God in song, dance and drama.

Third through fifth grade elective classes performed the drama, dance and chorus part of the program. Pre-school were dressed up as the world’s cutest angels. Kindergartners were the kings and brought gifts to Baby Jesus. First and second graders were shepherds out in the fields keeping watch over their flocks.

This program had us view the Christmas Story through the eyes of the animals that were present that Holy Night. The Sanctuary was filled with parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and many friends. Over 700 were in attendance.

Please check out “Galleries” to view some really cute pictures.

All news below is from the 2007-2008 school year.

Music with Mr. Agosto

I had the awesome responsibility and pleasure of teaching Elementary and Middle School music this past term and was so blessed!Elementary students were exposed to classical music, new instruments, and shared the joy of music-making. Pre-K through First Grade learned rhythm, pitch and how to sing together in their “singing voices”. Second through Fifth grades learned how to sing in harmony and learned about Opera. They even created a story for an opera (called a libretto) based on their favorite fairy tale.

Fun in Gym – Mrs. Rosario

Gym class for grades Pre-K through 2nd had a great time this year. They had so much fun, they probably didn’t realize all that they were learning. After warming up by stretching and running some laps in the gym they would start their activity. They had to be good listeners and pay attention to the directions and example to know how to play the game. Some of the games we played were: Follow the Leader, Cat & Mouse, Red Light, Green Light, Freeze Dance, Steal the Bacon, Simon Says, and Duck Duck Goose. They especially liked to play with our big parachute. We played many games with the parachute developing individual and group skills. We would put beach balls or froggies in the middle and see how long we could keep them in with out them jumping out. We also played games like kick ball, soccer, basketball and baseball. Students learned how to dribble a ball, shoot a basket, hit a ball with a bat and run the bases. They learned how to only use their feet and not their hands in soccer. We also worked with a balance beam, walked on stilts, learned how to do a bridge, tumble, do the splits and had relay races with a baton. All in all, the students were challenged and had lots of fun.

Finding New Gifts

Dance Elective is so much fun. The students get a chance to really work out and it’s a learning experience. Many students came and found out that they had gifts that they didn’t know about before. The students learned how to express their emotions in a different style of dance and they learned how to worship in Spirit and in Truth

Elementary Dance Elective – Mrs. Rosario

This year I had 23 boys and girls in Elementary Dance elective (grades 3-5). They danced to “Ancient of Days” with flags and streamers. They were such a blessing to work with. I was amazed how quickly they learned the steps and routine.

Art Class – Mrs. Colon

This year has been very exciting in Art. Students have learned a lot this year from Art History to the culture of others’ art work. Here are a few highlights of the year:
· Pre-K learned a lot of new things from learning about design and how to create a collage. The most exciting thing they enjoyed was their marshmallow/pretzel sculpture and worms in dirt mixture they made and ate.
· Kindergarten this year learned a lot about themselves and how they saw themselves. They made wire sculptures and large drawings of themselves.
· First grade learned about architecture. They leaned that every structure has a foundation to help support the building. With this they studied old castles and drew what their fairytale castle would look like.
· Second grade learned about overlapping and designing. They used this knowledge to create a name design where their name was the focal point of the design.
· Third grade learned about what a mola is. They learned that a lot of Indian, aboriginal and Spanish cultures use these types of symbolic pictures to tell stories and as a decoration. They then created their own type of mola.
· Fourth grade learned about self-expression by using multimedia. Multimedia is drawing, paper collage, magazine pictures and or painting to depict themselves. They did a wonderful job.
· Fifth grade had an art history lesson on the artist Piet Mondrian. They saw examples of his work and how it changed over time when he learned the different genres of Art. They then created their own style of Mondrian’s work.

Reading Lab – Ms. Aviles

This year the reading lab has experienced many fun activities. The fifth grade students presented a play in the fellowship hall and all of the elementary school students were invited. Several hands-on experiments were experienced with the Daybook for the Second grade, such as acting out our reader stories. Third grade enjoyed their favorite activities in their workstation times. Fourth grade acquired many new vocabulary words. All in all, the year was a fun filled adventure for each grade.

Library News

Students in Pre-K to 5th Grade have enjoyed reading books in the library and also enjoyed reading together as a group. Pre-K 3 has especially enjoyed being read to. They have enjoyed the stories of that curious little monkey, “Curious George.” They like listening to his adventures because he is just as curious as most of them. Pre-K 4 has also been read to throughout this year, they especially enjoy the Big Books. One of their favorites was “If the Dinosaurs Came Back.” They loved thinking of the great things that dinosaurs would do if they lived among us now. Kindergarten also enjoyed being read to, and they liked to look at books on their own since thy were almost at the stage of reading, and those that already knew how to read, enjoyed reading on their own. One of the books we read together was, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” This story was especially appealing to them since they had caterpillars in their classrooms, and it gave them an idea of the changes to look for in their class pets. First Grade had the privilege to take out one book from the library on a weekly basis. They enjoyed this freedom and responsibility. They loved to read on their own and we have also read a variety of books together such as the stories of Amelia Bedelia, which are very humorous because she takes everything so literally and always gets herself into trouble and funny situations. Second grade had the privilege to take out two books every week. They are all great readers. Some of their favorite books were the joke books, and the I Spy book collections. Few were also into history books. They enjoyed a lot of non fiction, which is great because they learn a lot of facts. We read “the Empty Pot” together which they enjoyed and taught them a lesson in honesty. The Third grade also borrowed two books on a weekly basis. They were more interested in fiction, such as the Judy Blume collection, sports fiction stories, and the Geronimo Stilton books. Third graders also enjoyed the Guinness World Record books, so we read a few of those together, because it was of their interest. Fourth Grade also took two books out every week, but they enjoyed reading so much that they always wanted to take out more than that. It was a blessing to see how they enjoyed to read especially since most started reading the Left Behind kids series, which is about the tribulation times as told int eh Bible. One student in particular impressed me, because she read more than thirty of the books in this series in just a month. We read parts of the first book in the series together, and it was great to hear their responses. Fifth grade read a variety of different books throughout this year. They liked fiction, and non fiction, they also enjoyed the Guinness Book of Records to the point that I had to split them up in groups and each group would have the book for 10-15 minutes each. As a class we read the book “Yellow Star,” which is a true story of a person who survived the holocaust as a child in the Lodz ghetto in Poland. It was great to see some of the responses to this toughing book. We also read, “Rules” which is about a fifth grade girl who has an autistic brother. This was a story that truly touched us all and gave us an insight into this topic. It also gave the opportunity to have great discussions. Overll, it was a great year, full of great reading.
